A down sleeping bag is one of the most expensive items in a backpacking kit, and it is also the one most people are afraid to wash. The fear is understandable, because wet down clumps together and looks ruined in the machine. In reality, a careful wash restores loft and warmth, while years of body oils, sweat, and trail dirt slowly flatten the fill and reduce insulation.

The first rule is to wash only when the bag truly needs it. A bag that smells musty, feels flat even after airing, or has visible grime on the shell is ready for a wash. A bag that was used for a single weekend trip is not. Between washes, air the bag out after every trip and use a sleeping bag liner, which catches most of the dirt and is far easier to launder.

Always use a front-loading washing machine, because a top-loader with a central agitator can tear baffles and twist the bag into a knot. Set the machine to a gentle or delicate cycle with warm water, never hot. Add a cleaner made specifically for down, not regular laundry detergent, which strips the natural oils from feathers and leaves residue that clumps the fill.

Before starting, close all zippers and turn the bag inside out if the manufacturer recommends it, and check the care label for any specific warning. Place the bag loosely in the drum so it has room to move, and run an extra rinse cycle at the end to remove every trace of soap. Soap left in down is the most common cause of a bag that comes out flat.

Drying matters more than washing. Down must be dried completely, or it will mildew and lose loft permanently. Use a large tumble dryer on low heat, and add two or three clean tennis balls or dryer balls. These break up clumps as the bag tumbles, and the process usually takes two to three hours, far longer than most people expect.

Check the bag every thirty minutes during drying and pull apart any clumps you find by hand. Resist the urge to turn the heat up to finish faster, since high heat can melt shell fabrics and damage the down. The bag is done only when it feels uniformly fluffy and no damp spots remain, even deep inside the baffles.

Never store a washed bag compressed in its stuff sack. Once it is fully dry, store it in the large cotton or mesh storage sack that came with it, hung in a closet or laid loosely on a shelf. Long-term compression crushes down clusters and permanently reduces the warmth you paid for.

Spot cleaning handles most trail dirt without a full wash. A damp cloth with a little down soap removes stains on the shell, and airing the bag in shade for a few hours removes most odours. Save the full wash for the end of the season or after a genuinely dirty trip, and your bag will keep its rating for a decade or more.

If your bag has a waterproof shell treatment, expect it to weaken over repeated washes. That is normal and not a reason to avoid washing. Reapply a spray-on durable water repellent treatment after drying if the shell starts wetting out quickly in drizzle, following the product instructions carefully.

A common mistake is washing a down bag in a bathtub and then wringing it out. The weight of wet down tears internal baffles, and wringing crushes clusters. If you must hand wash, support the full weight of the bag in the water, press water out gently without twisting, and dry it flat before finishing in the dryer.

Budget for washing supplies before your first wash: a bottle of down wash lasts many seasons, dryer balls are cheap, and a laundromat with large front-loaders costs far less than replacing a bag. Treat the wash as routine maintenance, like reproofing a rain jacket, not as a risky event.

Washed properly, a down bag comes back warmer, lighter-feeling, and fresher than it has been in years. The loft you restore translates directly into warmer nights on the trail, which is the whole reason you carried the weight in the first place.
